| CONGO, REP.
Les Tambours Brazza is lead by Emilie Biayenda and comprised of 17 members - 16 drummers and a choreographer. The group presents drum dances from Congo. Emilie Biayenda left school as a 10 year old to make his own way in life and set up his musical home in Brazzaville. His first period as a musician took him to the port of Pointe Negra, where he worked as a drummer. After 4 years he returned to Brazzaville. Les Tambours de Brazza sprang out of a workshop in 1991. The group made its first cassette in 1992, participated in the Jazz Mic Mac festival in France in 1994, and since then the band's popularity has grown. They have performed at a long list of festivals in Africa, Europe and the USA. |

![]() | ZANGOULA I have great sympathy for this disk. The instrumentalists are clever, the technical quality on these live tracks is brilliant, and the layout and background materials are beautiful and strong. Yet, the disk isn't at the top end of my scale. Why? Quite simply because the drum dance doesn't work well on disk. The very important visual aspect of the dance is of course impossible to arrange on disk. Les Tambours de Brazza guarantee a spectacular concert experience. In fact, one can experience a glimpse of the atmosphere and intensity of the concert here, too, but not much more. The group drums through a lone line of rhythms which are all exciting. But who sits down and just listens to one hour of drumming?
