On the Internet Nainy Diabate is a big artist at home in Mali. She had her major breakthrough in 1979 when she performed with Rail Band at a festival in the capitol, Bamako. Since touring the length and breadth of Mali she has also visited The Ivory Coast, France and Spain. Nainy Diabate comes from a Griot family and learned music in the traditional manner, as a child. She sings in the typical yelling and nasal mode of the female Griotte in Mali. Nainy Diabate has recorded many cassettes for the home market in Mali and West Africa, and had several big hits. She is married to the guitarist and producer Omar Cheikh Diabate, who has also produced the "Nafa" album, her first international album. Relevant artists: |

![]() | This album was recorded in Bamako with a band containing the traditional instruments of ngoni, balafon (xylophone) and djembe, plus solo guitar and bass. In addition there are keyboards and drums. Nainy Diabate is an established artist who sings in traditional style. She has a mighty voice and should have great potential. Yet, this album is not totally successful. The reason is that Diabate's song style suffers from the pop-oriented and one dimensional production. Diabate's voice becomes more and more irritating as the echo-filled songs roll along. It's like hearing ABBA's single hits in a row on a long playing CD: Overdoses. Nainy Diabate should find herself another producer next time. She deserves a better fate. This is actually a fairly good album.
